I know this penny has a lot of PMD; however, my question is were the elements that the arrows point to present before the damage or did the damage cause this? For instance, the circle right above the 8 on the date or the US in TRUST.

Looks like zinc rot. It's PMD.

Agreed, I was thinking Zinc rot after looking at the first 2 images - then I scrolled to the 3rd! just WOW! massive zinc rot goin on here.
