Please take a look at this 1991 Penny with two large Die Chips behind Lincoln's ear and a die crack. I haven't seen these die chips on a 1991 or any other penny so is this a rare occurence?

Large die chips and a crack behind Abe's ear--have seen very few of these, perhaps two at the most long ago.

Looks like a nice RIDB (Retained Interior Die Break).

Thanks all for the comments. Thanks Marve65 for the RIBD link.

That's what is so fun about this hobby if you have the patience to look through coins, you can learn something new almost every day. There is so much data and information.

Now I have to go back through all of my spike heads and die crack coins to see if they are also a RIBD.

Nice job on identifying the correct "die", Marve! What the OP actually has here though is an IDB (interior die break). The RIDB you identified is an earlier version of the same die but the pieces have fallen out now. So, the OP has a later version of an unlisted IDB. I'm pretty sure it's the same die anyway, JC will let you know for sure, Ted.

RIDB definition from COC:
Quote:
A retained interior die break occurs when a flake detaches from the die face but, instead of falling off, it sinks into the surrounding metal.

IDB definition from COC:
Quote:
When a thick flake spalls off the interior of the die face it leaves a void we call an interior die break. It appears on the coin as a featureless lump.

Ted, if you send this to JC on COC he would more than likely list it as a new IDB. Maybe reference the listing that Marve gave you.

-makecents- thanks for the clarification on the RIDB vs IDB. I will send JC an email tomorrow. It would be my first listing of any kind if he decides to list it.
