I have this 1829 large cent that I'm trying to decide what to do with. I believe it is the N-3 medium letters variety from the die break through the stars on the obverse from 7-9 o'clock.

Obviously there are some issues and it's a details coin. Is it worth grading due to the variety? Appreciate any thoughts and opinions on this inherited coin with some (but maybe not too many) miles on it. Thanks in advance.

I'd say VF20. Greysheet VF20 retail is $650, F15 is $360. As a details coin, it might still be worth it. Hopefully, someone with more knowledge will weigh in on this.

I'll say VF details. As for your other questions, I'll let someone more knowledgeable answer it.

I'm not into the different varieties nor their value so I have to beg off that.

there are a lot of issues to consider when grading earlier copper. strike, planchet issues, storage issues. I look at the overall coin and attempt to determine the sharpness of the devices to help with grade. typically the date is a key device for wear as well as ear and the rim surrounding LIBERTY. to me it appears that there is weakness from K10-K2 obv that is showing up in the stars being flatter than the others. these areas plus the stronger definition in the hair for me puts it in the VF box. to narrow it down more I'm looking at the reverse. the weakness seen on the obv can be also seen from K4-K9 on the reverse. lettering is stronger than F on this side also.

its not strong enough for VF30 so that leaves 20 or 25. overall the coin looks like something was removed from the coin (lacquer?) or even a cleaned up dug coin. if it was mine I would give it verdicare treatment and see what it does. as is I think its better than a 20 overall so technically i'd call it VF25. as is VF details (cleaned/PMD/improper storage) take your pick doesn't really matter much

One option to consider might be to submit it to Variety Slabbing Service for variety attribution. They won't grade coins, but will slab them and identify the variety. They are doing variety attribution for Large Cents and Bust Half Dollars now, as well as Morgan and Peace dollars.

Awesome coin! It does appear to be an N-3 Medium letters variety.

A great quality of the large cent market is that a huge portion of EAC collectors still purchase and hold onto raw coins. For that reason, and the fact that this would likely be a details coin, I would lean toward not submitting the coin. If the surfaces were perfectly smooth and the coin amazingly choice, I would lean toward TPG submission.

In the end, it depends what you want to do with the coin. If you would like to auction the coin, it would need to go to a TPG. If keeping it, might as well maintain it as-is!

I would send it in to be graded with ANACS and they can attribute it as well. They are definitely less expensive and I believe grade as well as any of them.
