I was reading the trends in Canadian Coin News I noticed 2 new varieties that I'm unfamiliar with 1859 5/5 #1 South and 1859 5/5 #2 North any idea?

Interesting, considering there are 14 dies with a repunched 5.

The grading services, coin websites, and others do similar with the 1858 cents. There are multiple 1858 dies with re-punched 1s, 5s, etc. Many are relatively common. IMO, references like that mean little unless they are die specific.

I am guessing that Mike Findlay picked up on those 1859 references because graded coins with those references sold in some auction.

I checked out coinsandcanada.com site out it lists these varieties with pictures #1 is the Haxby PC59180/181, the other shows a 5 that is doubled on the left part of vertical part of the 5.

Edit: After more searching for an answer I found the #1 and #2 in the back pages of the Charlton 65th edition, but we who helped with the info in those back pages never named them that. The #1 is on page 298, and the #2 is on page 297 the 5 looks the same as coins and Canada site

Those same 2 repunched 5's are in the Whitman Guide Book of Canadian Coins by Jim Haxby. In that book the repunched 5 #1 is the same as page 297 in the 2011 Charlton and repunched 5 #2 is the same as page 298 in the 2011 Charlton. Perhaps they got the numbers from there and reversed them, or just assigned the numbers on their own.

As 1960NYGiants and bosox said, there are a lot of repunched 5's. Identifying the die with the Haxby catalog # is probably the surest way to keep them all straight. Without looking at other markers ( die cracks, etc. ) it's hard to tell some of them apart, especially on lower grade coins.
