I purchased this nice, circulated 1898 Barber quarter a couple of years ago. I took it out today and examined it under magnification.

On the reverse I noticed a blob of metal at the base of the D in UNITED that goes up to the beginning of the ribbon with E PLURIBUS UNUM on it. I have checked the other Barber quarters in my collection and there is nothing there in this spot.

Is this a Cud of some sort? I'm sure it's nothing major, but it is interesting.

Thanks for any help rendered.

It could be a die chip - click on --> Cud to see the definition.

Agree that it is a die chip, not a Cud.
A Cud is a break on the rim of the die.

Thanks for the responses. I appreciate the information. It's always nice to discover something on a coin you've owned for a while.
