Yesterday I was about to pay for some groceries with my debit card, but when I saw that my total price was $5.02, I realized that if I paid in cash, I'd get a lot of change back. So I put away the card and pulled out a five and a one.

Good thing I did, because I received two coins in change that I didn't have in my collection. I got a 2021-D dime that, up until then, had been an empty hole in my Whitman folder. Boom, hole filled. Then, as I was checking one of the quarters, I saw what I thought was a mashed-up "D" mint mark. Turns out it was a "W," a mint mark I had never seen before in person!

Outside of knowing that these coins existed, I knew nothing about them. I discovered that this particular coin has a mintage of only two million. In over 50 years of collecting, it's got to be the lowest-mintage coin I've ever found in circulation. Thinking it was going to be valuable, I was surprised to learn that it's only worth about 15-20 bucks.

Thank you for your congratulations in advance. Now, moving on, can someone tell me why the W coins seem to be under priced, based on their mintage?

Not sure, but perhaps because they have been preferentially removed from circulation and saved?

That's a great find in circulation, congrats! =)

Quite possibly the W circulation quarters are just currently underappreciated. Maybe future collectors will be more enthusiastic about them?

Congrats!
I feel lucky to have found 3 W's

I just found another one today while searching rolls of quarters (2020 U.S. Virgin Islands). It's the 21st one I've found since beginning roll searching 3 months ago. I've probably gone through 35-40 boxes in all.

nice find on your first 'W' quarter.

all 2020 'W' quarters will have that "V75" privy on them.

so far I found 10 of them.

I'm not sure what you mean by "under priced" as I feel they are vastly "Overpriced". They really are not rare (millions of each), and I would never pay more than $8 each for a BU quality W quarter. I still need three of the ten but I'm waiting for them to drop to complete my set.

I've been told that the majority of "W" quarters were smuggled and never saw circulation, but sold to a handful of dealers, hence the current high costs.
