I cheat. I print plain old paper labels and attach them with clear packing tape wrapped horizontally around the entire box cover. Some of my labels are old enough to vote. The packing tape also keeps the corners of the boxes from splitting over the years.

Haha, that would work!

The problem is most adhesives don't stick well to that glossy, textured surface. You might try a piece of double-sided mounting tape, which works on textured walls. Then you could just attach labels of your choosing to the tape on the front of the box.
