Not sure if right area to post about unethical dealer. The company is called Wholesale Wheat Cents. Looking at this site it seems he's getting great reviews and comments. With that in mind I purchased 2=Red Rolls for $22.00 ea. and a 2 lb bag for $97.00. He shipped fast and received order in good time. With over 300 Wheats I received 1-1918 and 2-Barber Dimes and the rest of the coins were 1940's and 50's, nothing earlier. Here is his ad

TIGHTLY CRIMPED RED BANK WRAPPED ROLLS OF WHEAT CENTS WITH Barber dimes SHOWING!

IF YOU HAVE PURCHASED FROM ME IN THE PAST, YOU KNOW THAT I AM ONE OF THE FEW SELLERS THAT ACTUALLY SELLS TIGHTLY CRIMPED COIN ROLLS, LOTS AND SETS. THAT IS WHY IT BRINGS ME GREAT PLEASURE TO ANNOUNCE MY LATEST PURCHASE. THERE WERE MORE THAN 12,000+ ROLLS OF VARIOUS DENOMINATIONS INCLUDED IN THIS COLLECTION WHEN I GOT THE CALL ABOUT IT, SO I COULD NOT PASS UP THE OPPORTUNITY TO BUY THEM ALL. AFTER ALL, ORIGINAL BANK WRAPPED ROLLS ARE HARD ENOUGH TO COME BY, BUT ROLLS WITH Barber dimes SHOWING IN THIS QUANTITY ARE ALMOST UNHEARD OF! ONTO THE BEST PART.

EACH BUY IT NOW IS FOR ONE RED TIGHTLY CRIMPED BANK WRAPPED ROLL WHEAT CENTS WITH A Barber dime SHOWING ON ONE END!

THESE NEVER BEFORE SEEN ROLLS ARE TRULY UNIQUE AS THE OLD COIN MACHINES WERE UNABLE TO SIFT OUT SILVER DIMES WHEN THE PENNY ROLLS WERE BEING WRAPPED. I OPENED 10 ROLLS TO GET A BETTER IDEA OF WHAT WAS IN EACH ROLL AND WAS TRULY BLOWN AWAY...SOME ROLLS WERE ALMOST ALL Barber dimes! THERE WERE EVEN A FEW Seated Liberty dimes FROM THE EARLY 1800'S THAT FOUND THEIR WAY INTO THESE ROLLS! EVEN THE ROLLS THAT DIDN'T HAVE MOSTLY Barber dimes AND WERE STILL FILLED WITH UNCIRCULATED WHEAT CENTS, Indian cents, EARLY DATES, S-MINTS, STEEL CENTS AND MORE! EACH AND EVERY COIN IS GUARANTEED TO DATE ANYWHERE FROM THE EARLY 1800'S THROUGH 1958 (THE LAST YEAR THE WHEAT CENTS WERE MINTED)! YOU WON'T FIND ANOTHER COLLECTION LIKE THIS, SO WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR? BUY THESE ROLLS BEFORE THEY SELL OUT BECAUSE ONCE THEY ARE GONE, THEY WILL BE GONE FOR GOOD. A FANTASTIC WAY TO ADD SOME NEW COINS TO YOUR COLLECTION AND UPGRADE THE COINS IN YOUR ALBUMS!

to the CCF, Popsgladys. Unfortunately you learned an expensive lesson. "TIGHTLY CRIMPED" is a misleading term - it certainly does not mean that the rolls are original and untampered.

Sigh.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again...

Quote:
...EACH AND EVERY COIN IS GUARANTEED TO DATE ANYWHERE FROM THE EARLY 1800'S THROUGH 1958...

Suppose these were, hypothetically, genuine unopened bank-wrapped rolls the seller was selling. How can the seller possibly make any kind of guarantee as to the age or condition of the contents? The only logical way to make such a guarantee would be to open the roll, inspect every coin, then re-roll it.

Quote:
THESE NEVER BEFORE SEEN ROLLS ARE TRULY UNIQUE AS THE OLD COIN MACHINES WERE UNABLE TO SIFT OUT SILVER DIMES WHEN THE PENNY ROLLS WERE BEING WRAPPED.

I've never heard this particular lie before. I would imagine that anyone inventing and selling to banks a "coin machine" to sort and roll their coins wouldn't get many customers buying their machines if the machines routinely could not discern between a dime and a penny, to the extent being claimed here.

It's safe to conclude that there is no such thing as genuinely "unsearched" rolls of coins being bought and sold on the Internet. Everyone claiming to sell such items is either lying or grossly exaggerating, especially if they are making "guarantees" such as this. You can be fairly sure they are quite adequately and thoroughly searched, to filter out any 1955 doubled dies, 1909-VDBs, or anything else actually worth selling as an individual coin. It's probably been searched though by a couple dozen people: people buying bulk lots of coins, searching through them for gems, then on-selling the dregs to some other sucker. After three or four passes through the filter, I'd expect nothing less than what you actually found in the rolls.

But it's like professional wrestling: everyone knows its fake, carefully staged and curated, but it's "entertaining" so people indulge in it anyway. Most people buying such rolls know the claims of "unsearched" are bogus and don't believe anything the seller says, no matter how many capital letters they use in their sales blurb.

@pops, welcome to CCF but sorry that you got taken by this somewhat mis-leading seller. Consider not trusting anyone who uses capital letters so liberally.

Thanks for excellent comments. I do try and do research on sellers and this had good reviews. Guess pretty much can't believe what anyone says. No more lots. If I need any coins will buy individually.
Thanks again everyone

To CCF! It's a bummer you got taken by this seller. Just move on from it and be more cautious.

I am wondering where you saw the "great reviews and comments" other than their site? Since they own their site - they pick their customer quotes, or just make them up - so not much to go on there.

I see a similar seller on ebay when I search for the term "tightly crimped rolls" - but hesitate to post the name except to say it starts with opc when looking at the search results, but changes to a name starting with MOm when you open the page. That is interesting too.

Maybe I am missing something ...

Didn't you get what was advertised?
One Barber dime per roll, and a whole lot of wheat cents, all before 1958?

That's the way I read it.
