Hi,
I am new to this community and am still a beginner coin collector so please go easy on me. I am sorry if I did not post this in the best place. I have been collecting Morgans and Peace dollars for quite a while, but recently got introduced to the full step variety of Jefferson nickels. I looked through a collection of a couple hundred Jefferson nickels and found this one. I'm an idiot and somehow did not transfer my full coin photos of this nickel to my computer before I went out of town so this is the only photo I have of the coin for now. I do not remember the exact date either, please forgive me and know I will return with both the date and all my photos, including full coin photos. But I thought I would go ahead and see if anybody can help me determine if this Jefferson nickel is a 5 full step? And I would be super grateful if you could share your process on determining if this nickel is Full Step or not. Thanks so much in advance, hope yall are having a good memorial weekend!

to the CCF.

The coin appears to have some advance corrosion or spotty toning all over Monticello and the steps, so I can't say for sure if I'm seeing hits on the steps or if most of those spots are just the toning.

My input is FS if every one of those spots is just toning. Not FS if a few of those spots are hits across the steps.

You have the coin so you can tell.

BTW - I'm going to ask a Moderator to move this thread for you to US Modern Coins.

For context, it would be fun to see full, large and sharp pics of the obverse and reverse. Thanks.

I moved your topic to the Modern US Varieties area for you.

Can you post up a full coin image of both sides please?

Subjectively, it's close to 6FS. You have five relatively unbroken lines. However, the full steps designation is typically reserved for mint state coins, and all those little peck marks on the steps lead me to think this nickel is circulated.

If you are wondering what a TPG would grade those steps, it turns out that their criteria varies tremendously. From 1940 into the mid-1950s, PCGS will grade FS hard because perfect examples are plentiful. Once you get through the late 1950s and the 1960s, true examples of perfect 5FS and 6FS are increasingly rare, and PCGS grades more generously for FS.

To CCF! Full Steps is not my expertise, so I'll let other members answer it.
