This is a tough one for me. I realize scans are hard to grade. Details somewhat finer with coin in hand. Not familiar with the strike attributes either on these dollars. Another coin I found today while at my moms house. Been in a flip since the 60's. Looks never cleaned. It weighs in @ 27.2/27.3 grams on my gem scale. Rev. maybe a tad better than obv. but just my observation. Also if an expert out there may take a look at the date. See anything unusual as far as the 8 positioning ? (Actually it may be the 1 instead) Thanks. http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2008...1877Sobv.jpghttp://img.villagephotos.com/p/2008...1877Srev.jpgEdited by Indian1 05/30/2009 7:22 pm

I'm no pro on this, but I would give EF+45.

Obverse-limited; the reverse is AU IMO. The date is similar to others I note over at Heritage.

Hi all. Thanks for the input as well as the date attribution. I am going to believe then that these dollars (at least this yr/mm) had a pretty decent punch then. I personally concur about the AU rev. Was just curious about the obv. and maybe why it would not make a low AU. Either way the EF45 sounds just fine. I wanted to see if maybe worth while for a slab or not. I noticed FMV etc. and then checked the bay and it seems the prices are pretty low on this yr. Unless I am missing something. Maybe a lot of either fakes or whiz jobs. Good to know we have people in the Know around here. It helps much. Thanks.

Worth a slab, but only for authenticity purposes. Tons of fake TD's out there.

Put this coin in a reputable TPG's slab as noted, there are many counterfeits. The coin is above the $200 level and has XF details. It is very nice looking for the grade with even grey toning. The coin is also a family heirloom which further substantiates protection in a reputable TPG holder. Just my opinion

XF40...I love the original look of that coin. If you ever want to sell it...you know where to go...

I think this one is in the EF range, I just can't make up my mind whether it is 40 or 45 so I will say EF-40+

Well I guess there is a pretty fair concensus about the EF grade then. Now I will have to ask and find out what my step dad wants to do with the coin. Seems like there is some interest on here for it. That would be nice for someone who wants a decent addition to their collection. See if he wants to sell it raw or send it out. Maybe an auction after I figure a fair start price for it. I have one more seated half to post soon for grading.

I agree with 45. Great details. I would recommend to your step dad to have it certified by PCGS, NGC, or ANACS. It will bring in a lot more money, since this coin is often counterfeited. You should at least get it checked out by a dealer to make sure it is genuine. There are some very convincing fakes these days.

Once again thanks all for the input and info etc. I am very confident seeing that I know the coins history at least going back 50 yrs. and have looked at some fakes as well as the time periods a lot of them were done in and feel the coin is genuine. I will suggest to him though to have it certified.
