Strange - no flattening in that area on the reverse. And what are the "gouges" around Washington's pony tail? I'll stick around to see the answers.

Thank you Marve65! Quote: And what are the "gouges" around Washington's pony tail? That's why I'm confused with this one.

I'm thinking a Struck Through error, but I've never seen one like this one.

Well the "gouges" are obviously on the surface height of the die as the pony tail is a depression on the die and not affected. So something scraped the die on the surface.

@Marve65, yes you right, gouges has nothing to do with strike through Sorry I'm Still learning I confused it with feeder finger that usually are present when there are strike through errors. So if this is a real strike through then maybe could that be feeder finger instead of gouges?

Quote: then maybe could that be feeder finger instead of gouges? Well, a feeder finger would technically leave "gouges" on the die. You would have to find out if the Obverse die was used as the anvil die when minting the 2018 Quarters as the feeder finger would be scraping across the bottom die (anvil) not the top die (hammer).

That's pretty cool! Maybe Mike will chime in on this one.

I think it's gotta be some type of struck thru. Can something like that be created outside the mint without damaging the reverse?

@Marve65 - Die gouges or do you mean scratches?
