Here's one to ponder. It is a straight clip planchet that was broadstruck. But what's with the reeding? Some funky PMD to try and make folks think there is more going on here? Or is there more going on here? Comments welcome.

Photos of the edge are, in order: straight at the clip, 180 degrees from the clip, one side of the clip then the other side of the clip.

Odd how not all the reeds are straight up and down. This one is above my pay grade and I'm interested to learn more from reading others' comments.

Very nice tropicalbats! I wonder if it got stuck on some machinery or something that caused the reeded edge. I will contact Mike Diamond for this one, as I want to know what caused these reeded edges.

Edit: dang autocorrect.

Interesting. A vending machine mishap due to the irregular sized / incomplete planchet? Thanks, Doug.

Holy cats, Bats! That's not something you see every day! Have you figured out if the width and spacing of the reeds on this coin match any other coin from the same year?

Please let us know if you can figure out just how the coin got its reeds. If it's PMD it really is a head scratcher!

It gets a 10 out of 10 from me!

That is indeed a head scratcher. I don't see any way that reeding could come from the mint so I'm suspecting PMD of some sort.

Interesting to learn when additional experts weigh in.

This is a common form of post-strike damage seen in slightly oversized coins (broadstrikes, minor off-center strikes, etc.). The oblique "reeding" is produced when the coin gets struck in the rifled or grooved tube of a coin sorting or coin-wrapping machine (opinions differ as to which it is). It diminishes the value of any error coin you might find it on.

Thanks Mike! I was thinking it was malicious use of a quarter to try and roll it around the edge to add reeding, but would have taken a lot of pressure. Never saw a broadstrike with this kind of damage before, but certainly makes sense and I have learned another way that coins become what they are. I agree the damage will lower the value as damage is damage, but this one still looks pretty cool and it's not that expensive of an error coin so shouldn't hurt it too badly. But this one I'm keeping as an example of that damage.
