I removed this large head 2004 20c coin in a RAM mint set. Didn't notice the bite out of the rim on the obverse until putting it into a 2x2.

If this is PMD how did it end up in a mint set?

But the packaging was intact? My first thought would be that it was damaged by the packing machinery.

Hondo's answer sounds plausible.

Interesting question. I am certainly not an expert and would defer to to the opinions of the previous posters as being a better idea of what the cause is.

I bought a 'mint' set and when I received it and looked closer, I could see that one of the coins was definitely not an original in the set. The original coin had been replaced by one from circulation and the packaging resealed. Too bad for me - I didn't realise that immediately. My set was purchased on ebay and now I very rarely buy from ebay - too many dodgy sellers and ebay don't care (still get their commissions).

Did you get that set directly from the RAM or another reliable seller?

I have never bought anything directly from the RAM.Post Office yes but RAM no.

I bought this off ebay with a bunch of other sets all of which were good apart from this coin.

Tough question. There's no telling if a seller could have swap the coin.

It does look more like some Grease Fill 'error' from the surface but edge damage. Certainly odd.
