I was following the 1850-O Liberty Head Double Eagle that just sold on GreatCollections (Item #1786570), and I was a bit surprised it received an MS-60 grade. I was more surprised that it just realized a price of $66,962 (with Buyer's Fee)

A few things jumped out at me when examining the photos:
There are obvious abrasions and contact marks across both sides, especially on Liberty's cheek, neck, and the obverse fields.
The reverse has some heavy scuffing that appears to have worn down parts of the word "STATES," which seems unusual for a Mint State coin.
Luster looks muted and patchy in areas, which makes the surfaces feel closer to an AU than a full MS.
I get that 1850-O $20s are notoriously rare in Mint State and that grading standards can be a bit looser for early New Orleans issues. But even with that in mind, this still feels like a stretch for MS-60.

Would love to hear other opinions—do you think the grade is fair, or am I being too critical? What about the realized price here?

If the coin is truly Mint State 60 is the lowest grade possible. The marks could all be from bags or the ways it was stored over the years. If no circulation wear is present then it is not an AU coin, Gold is a soft material so possible to be scratched and scuffed without seeing circulation. That's all I got.

PS: Or else the label is wrong

Adding a picture of the coin from the auction so that folks can continue to learn after if/when GC takes down the auction images. Also, since your question seems to be mainly directed toward the grade, I'm going to move this thread over to that subforum.

Thanks for adding the picture; makes sense. This is my first post on CoinCommunity, and I'll keep this feedback in mind for future postings.

Welcome!!

First off, let's define Mint State. Solely wear/rub/friction determine whether a coin is mint state or not. A coin can have an unbelievable amount of contact marks and still remain mint state. So a coin without any degree of wear is mint state.

For Liberty Head double eagles, the main point of reference is Miss Liberty's cheek. The highest point of the design and the first that displays wear, let's observe that closely. There are a plethora of dings, bumps, and scrapes on the cheek, but the luster remains complete. Wear slightly changes the color of the metal on the high points from the oils on the skin, and that is not apparently visible here.

Next are the fields. Although there is a minor haze discoloration upon close inspection, the luster remains complete. There is no halo effect around the stars or other design elements noticed either. Below the eagle's wings on the reverse is a great place to look for broken luster as well.

The scuffing you mentioned across STATES is actually a mint made strikethrough.

Overall, I see a Mint State coin, later die state, with the dies recently polished to produce a prooflike effect. A minor mint error offers a small distraction but unique character. The detail is sharp with plenty of mint frost remaining. This coin would make a perfect addition to a registry.

jacrispies nailed it. I am surprised it did not get a 61. Hard to get a 60 these days.
