OK, Hi CCF! I Found a 2017-D that has a good example of Three different things I keep seeing on multiple Shield Cents, mostly 2017-2018. On both Obverse and Reverse I keep seeing, what appear to be flow lines?, (#1) lines going from the top of the peripheral devices to the rim of the coin? Some extend all the way to the rim, some don't. It gets fairly weird looking when there is a (#2) small ditch around the inboard rim (field) as well. Also I keep seeing different year coins with what appears to be a (#3) "crack" on the top left of the shields rim? I apologize for asking about 3 things on one coin but it is a great example and I can compress some knowledge into one Topic with one coin hopefully. I have posted Obverse, Reverse and close up of shield. I hope these pictures with the 300kb MAX are clear enough. Thanks ahead of time CCF! Edited by NoCentsKyle 06/23/2025 01:46 am

Dearborn what does the last D in DDD stand for? I didn't see anything to explain in the link. Oddguy, ditch = ridge line, can you explain for a newbie? Top left shield = die crack area, I have seen so many of these on LSC already, that must have been getting a lot of pressure in that area if that many dies over the years all failed in the same place, WoW! For this coin that makes total Cents with the amount of Die Deterioration on this one, see what I did there .

Quote: ridge line, can you explain for a newbie? Actually called a " Ridge Ring". Click on the word " Ridge Ring" for your definition.

Ridge Ring, got it. Link says "thins periphery devices" wouldn't "elongate Periphery devices" describe what we see better? I imagine it happens when either side of periphery devices field retreats and the letters look like stretch from Casper the friendly ghost movies not just.. anorexia type thin? Maybe I don't understand processes and deterioration enough yet. jbuck lol there are three D's and when I went to the link it describes two of those are very well represented but not the third, it could be first or second for all my brain cares, it just knows DDD and Die Deterioration does not compute, completely ? If I am too ahhh just say so I can handle criticism decently. -Kyle
