Super article @mike. When I read this, I started to think about non-modern coins that have been struck by defaced dies and the only example I could think of was the Bashlow restrikes of CSA Cents. I wonder if you (or anyone else here) can think of other examples?

Brandmeister, in my article I distinguish between canceled dies (the sorts of modifications you're describing) and defaced dies. A canceled die retains much of the design, apart from the grooves that are carved/ground into the die face. A defaced die is missing most of the design.
