This penny seems to show md on obv date and lower rev.
But LIBERTY on the obv looks odd and am curious what caused this doubling. Thanks.

What you're seeing is all Machine Doubling. Machine Doubling was pretty common on the 1969 S's.

Thank you! What specifically causes the large "halo" at the bottom of each letter in "LIBERTY"?

Machine doubling, yes. I suspect Die Deterioration is playing a role as well.

Thank you so much! I have one more question about the wide, flat relief, kind of a ghost of each letter of LIBERTY but slightly south in all cases. Is it the original strike that got flattened out when the machine jumped to the final stamp?
