I have been having a tough time getting a good mental picture of Buffalo nickel DDO coins, so I bought this identified specimen on ebay for $19, sold as FS-101. Obviously it's a doubled die obverse. Is it indeed FS-101? After looking at the actual listings on Variety Vista, Wexler, and PCGS, I still can't say that I have a solid feel for FS-101 vs. 102. They seem very similar to my eyes.

I think I might at least be getting better at distinguishing actual DDO specimens from poor metal flow (spatula letters) and circulation wear (fat 193x dates).

I'm not 100% certain but the L in Liberty looks more like the 002. http://varietyvista.com/03%20Buffal...6PDDO002.htm

Very nice coin , I didn't post my 1936 FS-501 that I got from my friend in Waco , and the B and Y of LIBERTY on mine looks like the ones in your coin . so I'm on the FS-101 club

Nice coin!

It's DDO-001, Stage B. (There is some debate about stages with this variety). There are four "tells" that distinguish the two DDOs. On DDO-001, the lower curl of the 9 is extremely thick. On DDO-001, the NW corner of the "B" in LIBERTY extends westward. On circulated coins like yours, this is subtle. On DDO-001, there are a couple short but bold scratches extending from the tip of the third feather to the second feather. And on DDO-001, there are light die scratches extending SW from the bottom of the 3 and in the later part of Stage B there is also a die gouge extending S from the 6 in the date. All of these markers exist into Stage C except for the light scratches below the 3. in Stage C, the coin also has heavy die clashes in the usual places. The extreme thickness on the bottom curl of the 9 is the most visible marker and is the first point of pickup.
