Impressive premium for that counterstamp. What's the significance of it?

Very nice!

I have Rice in my family tree. Came to New England from England in the mid to late 17th century. Also, my wife's cousin married a Rice, so my son has two second-cousins named Rice.

I need details!

Now you need the "and beans" counterstamp to complete the set.

#jbuck .... Never knew rice grew on trees!?

Regarding this RICE c/s auction, I was planning to bid, but I lost interest when it quickly exceeded my sense of its worth. Also, I have two superior examples in my collection. By superior, I would point out that the host coins also carry the issuer's address, being 194 Canal Street in NY City. Having the address makes for a slam-dunk, positive attribution. Here are pics of one ....

Here are my notes on Samuel N. Rice .... SAMUEL WAS A DAGUERREIAN (photographer) LOCATED AT 194 CANAL ST., WORKING FROM 1849 TO 1854. A COUNTERSTAMPED 1 REALE WAS SOLD BY STACKS FOR $460 IN 2008. I HAVE A DAGUERREOTYPE WITH MATCHING STAMPS ON THE FRAME. JUDGING FROM SAMUEL'S ADS, HE WOULDN'T TAKE PHOTOS FOR LESS THAN A DOLLAR.

Icing on the cake for this collector is acquiring an example of the counterstamper's product; in this case, a stamped photograph ....

Also, a contemporary advertisement adds to the history ....

If any dog ever eats my RICE collectibles, he'll go under a knife at the veterinarian's for a cut to the chase, a dice-n-rice so to speak!

Is it too much just to follow him around with a bag for a couple of days? Or just lock him in a crate!
