A long-time member of our local coin club passed away last year. His family has been organizing his various collections which were more extensive than anyone imagined. Besides coins, he had railroad pocket watches, antique tools, matchbooks, promotional pens, and many other collectibles. They are starting to offer some items for sale and I was able to pick up this double eagle. I think it's one of the nicest pieces from his collection, but since the inventory is still incomplete there might be even better treasures to be revealed.
What are your grade opinions and comments on this coin?

I'm not sure if some of the flatness on the obverse is wear or strike. The reverse looks better than the obverse, I'll say AU55. A very nice example, congrats on the pickup!

I say any authentic CC double eagle is simply spectacular.

Appears to be in an older TPG holder (PCGS?) so I suggest well struck AU53.

A lovely coin indeed.

Somewhere between high AU and low Unc would be my guess. (AU58 to MS61 if you are a numbers person)

This coin has some very attractive prooflike reflectivity which I can't capture well in my photographs. Still, these angled shots might give you an idea.

PCGS called it as AU-55. Seems very solid for the grade.
