jbuck: No, that's not the reason for the derision, but it stands out like a sore thumb: that's NOT the 1809-29 Bust device used on those dated Half Cents; ergo that's a hell of a re-engraving job!

I only have the one classic head half cent—in my 7070—so I am not sure I would have ever noticed that was the problem without a closer look at the series.

Looks like a banged up date to me (at minimum). Way too small for 1825 but 1835 looks pretty close.

Yes, Alpha, after zooming in I can see something is amiss. Looking at the Red Book gave me more clues...

The 1825 Half Cent has two obverse dies, and only one die for the reverse. This coin doesn't have that reverse die

The grading services all make mistakes like this . Just send it back and get it fixed . Or sell it as an error slab as others do .

Pacificoin: This isn't a simple "Ooopsie!"; it's a fundamental failure of the process...

This is a simple mistake. You should realize how many coins a PCGS grader sees in a day.

Just because you had a rude waiter at the restaurant, doesn't mean the entire restaurant business is faulty.

I expect that a heralded Third Party Grader would note a re-engraved, tooled date, the amount of coins that they receive to grade notwithstanding. That is No Excuse, and PCGS will tell you so. A chain is only as strong as its weakest link, rude waiters notwithstanding

"Tooled date"? This isn't my area, but are you sure it's not just a damaged 1835?

The reverse sure looks like the 1835 C-2 to me... even segments of the die crack.

Alph2814: yes, it is tooled (i.e.: an out-of-Mint caused movement of metal, by an implement) to be dated 1825
