What you're seeing is Die Deterioration Doubling. It caused by worn dies. The die that struck the obverse of your coin was starting to wear out from use.
I also note that more and more users are starting to post only partial coin images. It is preferable that we see the entire coin as well when posting up coin.
Well at least now you know what Die Deterioration looks like - the letter seem to "stretch" towards the rim because that is the way the metal flows during striking - from the center of the coin, radially towards the rim because dies have a slight curvature to them.
