I keep coming back to look at this 1997 S quarter knowing that proofs are double struck and sometimes thought to be DDO when they are actually not. There are no listings on any of the sites for a 1997 but this one sure does look like the IGWT could be a doubled die. Your opinion would be appreciated.

This is a tough one. Looks like Machine Doubling to me, but I could be wrong.

The T of TRUST convinced me to be on team Machine Doubling too. With that said, it might *also* be a DDO. I can't tell if the serifs are split on the date because the coin is too shiny. I'm interested to see where we net out on this one.

Thanks EV and Spence. Maybe I can take better photos when I get back home. IGWT looks more like a DDO than some of the "verified" ones.

Well, it has similarities to the 1995-S proof quarter doubled die.

What I see reminds me that proofs are multi-struck to bring out the most detail, so any movement between strikes can cause doubling. That being said, a machine doubled doubled die coin is not impossible.

Flat field doubling is a possibility. I hadn't realized that it sometimes produced features on raised devices. My understanding had been that it mostly produced ghosty doubling on the fields (as the name rather implies). But the 1985 proof cent in this article does show doubling on the date.

Thank you jbuck and Brandmiester. I think you both are correct. There's a wealth of knowledge here at CCF and I appreciate all the comments.

jfeed, keep in mind that we are speculating. If it were my coin, I would want to hear someone like Tanner Scott or Mike Diamond say it's Machine Doubling or flat field doubling (or whatever) before I decided it's a worthless curiosity. Proofs can show some unusual doubled dies compared to business strikes because they capture the tiny details so precisely, and they are usually well preserved.

Thanks Dearborn... Exactly !! That's why I kept pulling it back out of the 2X2 and taking another look.
