I'm not very good (at all!) at grading Indian Head cents. Obviously this coin is in pretty nice condition but I cant tell if it's AU, MS, or what! help!

From what I can make out from the pictures I would grade this as AU-50.

There appears to be ever so slight wear on the reverse leaves. The Obverse looks great, minus the small verdigras spot. The four diamonds are very sharp. There are a couple of ticks on the chin and cheek on the OBV, but I don't think this is wear, per se. I think the OBV is MS63 level, but reverse is AU55-58, so it might get an MS60 net. It is also possible that the slight wear I see on the reverse leaves is just a weak strike, and so the reverse could also potentially go MS63 and then get knocked back one or two grades because of the verdigras spots.

Very nice coin!

There appears to be definite wear on the high points of the reverse wreath and slight rub on the Indian's cheek and lock of hair. The obverse strike is very sharp, with full feather, diamond, and denticle detail. The spot at 3:00 is distracting and would hurt the value. Overall I'll agree with Echizento: AU-50.

Is that possible? To me, if either side is AU, then the coin cannot receive an MS grade.

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

steve199: you might be right. I may not have enough knowledge about what a grading company would do if one side is MS63-65 and the other is AU.

I think the coin is at LEAST AU55 and then maybe knock it back to AU53 for the verdigras spots. I think AU50 is a bit too low. The feathers on the obverse are very sharp.

I would really want to see more pics of the reverse before I laid an AU on it. Any chance of that, GB? It's just odd to me for an IHC that pristine on the obverse to show enough wear on the reverse to knock it out of MS consideration altogether.

Gettingbrowned, maybe you can get better focus/sharper details on the photos if the coin is shot straight on, rather than at an angle.
