I am out in California helping my folks with some real estate. Mom wanted to surprise me with some coins and bought some from the Littleton Coin Company. She got the 50 State Quarters and a few nickles and a 2009 Unc Silver Eagle. Prices are a little high but is this a good company?

MtnCoinMan- I don't want to have this response be too negative with regard to Littleton. An elderly relative of mine used to buy from them all the time because, as he used to say, "you know you're gettin' quality." And my response was always "yeah, but you can go to a shop or show and make sure you get quality coins for a lot cheaper." So to answer your question, yes, Littleton is a well-known company, which sells quality coins and supplies, but their prices are much more than I would ever pay for the coin(s) offered.

Well, they're certainly known to be VERY pricey ! Many relate them to the same as Home Shopping Network, Coin Talk, CSN, etc. But, I suppose, if one sees the coin in hand.....it is what it is and you like it......and you don't deem that it's "too" overpriced......then that's all that matters really I suppose. But......overpricing combined with shipping costs can make it not such a good deal even if you do like the coin. What was the price she paid for the 50 State Qtrs. ? (and was this P&D....or P,D,&S ?) Littleton has been around for quite some time, so that says something, but it's really just "pricing" where the issues lay with most folks, I believe. I'm not aware of any lawsuits and deception accusations and such things from the Littleton Coin Co. You DO get what you pay for.....it's just that you're REALLY gonna pay for it ! .....

Here is the point guys, my mom thinks she did something wonderful for me and if I say anything, it would just crush her. I know we, here on this board, consider price, but sometimes, there are things that money just can't buy. Mom was so proud of what she did, I do not want to hurt her.
Have any of you ever had to handle a situation like this?

MtnCoinMan- yeah. I totally know what you mean. Well, as long as she is happy with what she did, and you are happy with her gesture and the coins, then it is a win-win situation. But in the future, I wouldn't order very much from them unless they have some very unusual, good offer.

I recently saw Littleton advertising the 50 State Quarters for only $19.95 which is a decent price considering it is less than 2x face for Unc coins. Of course, that is only an "introductory offer" to get you to purchase $30 Silver Eagles and things like that. IMO, Littleton is a different kind of marketer from the likes of HSN, National Collectors Mint, etc. They are a perfectly legitimate company and do not use heavy-handed sales tactics, they will actually help a collector build a collection via mail. The biggest downside is that their prices are 25+% above RedBook prices and you have to pay to ship back coins you do not want.

Littleton does nothing more than stamp companies have been doing for years. Yes, approvals can be overpriced, but they come right to you, so there is a convenience factor to consider.
It's your mom's money. Period. If she wants to spend it on you, let her, and let her spend it wherever she wants. She doesn't need to know the "reality" of it all.

But Bio.....Just think if Littleton bought time for infomercials on HSN......and just think if they did use guys just like the CSN guys ! and had "Coin Hour with Tony and Sherri from Littleton"..... But yeah....you're right that Littleton is "seperate" from those people.......at least for now.

I agree with WpgLwr. Don't say anything but thanks to your mom. It's nice to have a family member that supports your hobby. In the future, if she asks you what you want for birthday or something, give her a brochure from a different company with a few suggested items circled. Or a list from your local coin ship. Littleton is very expensive, but it was her money and a nice gesture.

What jbuck said!
Me, it would be extremely rare for me to deal with any mail order coin supplier. I'm one of those that has to see the coin first.
Also, I'm one to enjoy the "thrill of the hunt", so 99% of my coins are acquired via roll searches or circulation finds.

I bought from Littleton once when I was in 6th grade (1973). I remember because it was part of a school assignment involving writing a business letter. I got a couple of Lincolns from them and they sent out some foreign coins for my approval. Still got that set of coins from Laos I think. Still in the little plastic bag stapled to the paper...lol. I don't take them serious anymore. I've seen some of the prices in some publications.

Well, mom just got bad news from the doctor, her lung biopsy came back positive and she starts chemo next week. This could be the last gift from her. This is one of the reasons I am out here in California now.

Not everything from Littleton Coin is overpriced. You can find a deal every once in a while. But you have to know what you are looking at and the going price to do this.
