From time to time I buy coins that are have gunk and corrosion to see if I can conserve the coin. I got the coin for an auction price of $7.50 and 99 cent shipping. I soaked the coin in acetone for 24 hours in a closed container then followed with a 24 hour soak in Verdi-Care. The final result showed the coin to be the 1858/7 overdate. The Cud above the first 8 is there and a faint 7 tip on the last 8. The wingtip is broken. Now I know this coin is in bad shape, but to get an overdate for $7.50 isn't a bad deal. The first 2 pictures are the coin before treatment.

How could you possibly tell if it's the overdate? Other FEs have a "broken" wing tip and telling an 8/7 is hard enough to see on a high grade coin. The coin cleaned up well enough to be an album coin.

I bought a bottle of Verdi-Care not too long ago. Did the 24-hr Acetone soak, then the 24-hr Verdi-Care soak on about 10 coins that had verdigris. Not one had any improvement, all still had the bright green just like before.

I think Verdi-Care is a scam being perpetuated on forums by people connected with the company. The before and after pictures are BS. Maybe some combination of Vinegar, Lemon Juice, and Baking Soda could do that. But Verdi-Care did not. And I even aggressively swabbed the verdigris areas every couple hours during the Verdi-Care 24-hr soak. No improvement, waste of time and money.

I am sorry for your lack of results with Verdi-Care. I have no affiliation with them, but have had great results with coins. I think some coins have really bad corrosion and Verdi-Care will not work on them. I think mild verdigris removal is what the product is designed to address. I have just been lucky with the more severe examples.

I understand. I even tried it with a couple Lincoln Cents that just a little mild verdigris on the inner edges of the rim. No luck. The 24-hour acetone soak actually seemed to do some good on many coins. Even swabbing them vigorously didn't remove even minor areas of verdigris for me. Even tried the "toothpick" method they recommended on small spot areas to no effect.
