I don't have many bracteates in my collection ... maybe the one I just acquired is the 4th or 5th.
And even though the auction listing had the size (28 mm), my brain didn't really process how large that is for a bracteate.
Well, it's a really impressive size:
A-Gigantic-Bracteate

And I'm used to handling thin medieval coins, but it's only three quarters of a gram spead across that size, so I'm pretty sure it's the thinnest coin I own (I guess I can do the math...).

Anyone else out there got a large one?

What a super coin @tdz! Let me know if you want help with the Bonhoff attribution.

I think that this one is the largest in my collection--27 mm/0.84 g and from Magdebourg, albeit with a different design than @keith's. This one predates their coin as it was minted 1142 to 1152 AD:

A-Gigantic-Bracteate

Nice additions!
@Keith I must have seen somewhere that you also had that type and forgot.

So it seems these large ones were characteristic of the earlier days for this style of coinage in central Europe (or maybe just Halberstadt)?. My other (smaller) ones are mid-13th to early 14th centuries.

My calculation gives an average thickness of 0.12 mm for this coin, which truly makes it paper thin (Wikipedia says the thickness of standard copier paper is 0.1 mm). Quite a testament to the skill in medieval mints.

I'm seeing Bonhoff 463-464 for this type, but not sure the differences (maybe the legend?)

That's a nice one!

I've always wanted to get into bracteates, but they seem so fragile (and the large ones expensive!).
