I need help in "Overton" varieties. I believe this is a O-105, but I am new to this series. Also, is there a die crack near the eagle's wing? Thank you.

I appreciate the help. It looks like I have a lot of researching to do. This is a great hobby though.

Quote:It is my first and only Capped Bust half dollar. A great milestone! I only have the one in my 7070. Two if you count the reeded edge type sitting next to it.

It is indeed an O-104. The 104 and 105 share an obverse die, and the reverse is very similar. The biggest difference I see is the shape and angle of the 0 in 50 C. Uh oh.... this is your first Capped Bust half dollar. There is a disease called "Bust Half Fever" that will put your life in ruins if you don't turn back now. I purchased my first bust half dollar for my type set years ago, and now I have 70+ bust halves. The anomaly on the eagle's left wing is a clashmark of Liberty's chest on the obverse die. You can also see a V-shaped clashmark in the field under the U in UNUM.

You should keep an eye out for The Top 100 R4 & R5 Capped Bust half dollar Varieties and Sub-Varieties by Edgar E. Souders. It's a pocket sized book which came out in 2002, still some relevance to it, lots of photos of what to look for and keep you only buying the ones that will make you $$$ in your search. The book can be found on ebay for well under $10 usually. I just got mine the other day actually, much easier than hauling around a big Overton book at shows, plus a lot more discreet.

Thank you for the information on the book! I will definitely buy that. Also, thanks for the information on the Die Deterioration. The friend I bought this from said he believed there was a die crack near the eagle's wing. This community has been great. Thanks again!
