It seems to me that the post on the die that formed the inside of the letter D was nearly broken off when this coin was struck at the mint. As to the notch at the southwest corner, it is anyone's guess as to whether that is damage to this cent or if the punch used to create the mintmark on the die was a little damaged (I suspect the former).
