I'm honestly feeling overwhelmed for the first time in the hobby, though I'm not complaining. I've recently bought what had to have been a collection dump of Wheat Cents, and I've spent about 12 hours researching just three 1957-D's and probably another two hours on this post...

I've been all over VV / Wexler's / Coppercoins and I've been debating how best to ask for help. I can't imagine posting every coin and expecting the kind folks here to do the work for me, but I could really use some advice on how best to go about examining & attributing such a large volume of coins in general.

I bought 8 rolls. Should I sort them all out by condition/date/mint and start with really obvious stuff only? Set aside and repeat?

For the 1957-D below, could you please let me know what you see? Without external input, I'm still very unsure, even with every reference online. Any advice is greatly appreciated

I'll post closeups of the reverse tomorrow, it's getting late...

I think the doubling you're seeing is a combination of Die Deterioration Doubling and some Machine Doubling.

8 rolls isn't that much to start sorting into categories before searching - just go one roll at a time - one coin at a time. I get bags of 2500 at a time where I'l just take a handful when I have time and just go for it. Sometimes a bag lasts me a month or more -
"For sure" coins go into a pile, "Maybe" coins go into another pile, then I fill Mason jars with the common wheat cents but by years - "Teens", 20's, 30's, then all 40's and 50's. After I'm done then I roll the teens, 20's, and 30's in separately marked rolls. The 40-50's stay in the mason jars and I store downstairs.
After I'm done the "For sure" coins go into labeled 2x2's. The "Maybes" I go thru again for correct verification.

Hope it helps........

I'm pretty new to this, but, I agree with Marve65:
If I can find a match, it goes into a 2x2. If I don't want to take the time to ID the error, it goes into a plastic coin tube marked with the type of error. Coins I think might have an error go into another tube. Everything else goes into a jar. A month later, I relook at the coins from the jar - amazing how many things I sometimes find the 2nd (or 3rd!) time through, as I learn to look for more and more things!
The only thing I see on your coin are a couple die chips and a die crack, but, others here are much better spotting things than I am.

Errers, thank you, I was certainly getting nowhere fast. Should've posted sooner - Your input helps a lot.

Marve65, snailking1, that's exactly the kind of advice I was looking for, thank you both. I'm going to take a different approach than I was, with both your responses in mind. You gave me some great ideas for sorting and storage!

Here's another one of the three that had me stumped, this one at least has a nice clash. I don't believe, now at least, that there is doubling. The N & E look a bit high to me on this one. I think some wheat stalk lines might be showing within the B & E of Liberty. I believe the tip of a wheat stalk is in the crotch of 7 in the date as well. There may also be some of Lincoln's vest off the E of One on the reverse, but I'm not sure.
