Hi All,

Very new to the numismatic world. I have been fascinated with the National Parks and over the last several years have visited perhaps 20. Reading about them I found out about the 5oz ATB coins and bought some. Now I am looking at a deal to buy the entire set for a bit under $200 / coin. In reading I discovered that there were 2 sets - one that has the 'P' mark and one that does not. This would be the burnished set that has the 'P' mark.

Am I throwing good money after bad here? Are these sought after as collectibles? My 'rule' has been that I only buy coins whose intrinsic vale is close to the purchase price, and these do fit that rule given where silver is sitting, but I am curious about the long term collectable value and if there is any.

Thanks

Ray

Ray, I have two of these coins, both P min marks with the mint packaging. Both were accumulated due to their subject The "P" mint were issued for collectors and have a lower mintage than the un mint labeled versions. Current pricing of silver puts the bullion value for each piece over $200 so your target pricing is below melt value.

Mintage levels dwindle for even the bullion coins after 2012 making them possibly more difficult to acquire, and with that, usually more expensive. If you can get them for around melt value I would go for it, but in my opinion they will in the long run only have a bullion value.

Have you checked ebay for recent completed sales? It's a good gauge of the market. I see OGP P pucks going for $230 and up.

with the possible exception a few select, more popular parks that may command a bit of premium.

My fear is that the parks will be going away and all we will have left are pictures and coins to remind us. Having seen a bunch lately, I for one will miss them.
