I've written about a 1941 proposal that called for an additional US Mint facilty in the central United States ("US"). (Read about it here: What If? 1941 Additional US Mint.)

The proposal made me think about its potential impact on the classic-era US commemorative coin series.

First, the 1946 Iowa Statehood Centennial Half Dollar. If a central US Mint was operational at the time of its issue, I wonder if its coin committee would have requested that its "local" mint strike the coins vs. Philadelphia? If such a request was fulfilled, the Iowa coins would likely feature a mint mark, something that Philadelphia-struck coins of the time did not include. A subtle change, but one that is an important distinction to many collectors.

Then there are the 1946-51 Booker T. Washington Birthplace Memorial and the 1951-54 George Washington Carver-Booker T. Washington National Memorials commemorative coin programs. Would they continue to include just P / D / S coins? OR Would a fourth mint be added to the mix? The multi-year / multi-mint coin programs are large enough as is, imagine if the were even larger?

I have to believe if they thought they could make money by including the other make believe mint they would have issued coins from that new mint.

An interesting thought experiment. I wonder if you think that this hypothetical mint would be treated any differently than West Point? I believe that there are a seven or so modern day commemoratives that have been minted at this facility. The West Point Academy Bicentennial was an obvious choice to be minted there, and the Statue of Liberty commemorative kinda makes sense, but I'm not sure that I see as much of a connection with the Mt. Rushmore commemorative.

Considering the operational and procedural changes the US Mint has gone through over the past 80+ years - and the changes in coinage use in the US - it seems like any comparison would be a proverbial apples-and-oranges scenario.

That said, as the "1941" Mint was to be purpose-built as a minting facility (vs. a bullion storage facility), I think it would have been a part of the "regular rotation" for general coin production (circulating and otherwise) and thus would have operated differently vs. the more specialized nature of West Point's production.
