Not sure where to ask this question so hopefully I am OK here? Anyway I have some uncirculated coins in flips that are starting to look like they might be becoming affected by being left in the plastic flips. The original presentation is nice so I have left them in place but I have noticed "blotches" forming on some coins. Maybe that was going to happen anyway but now I wonder if it's better to take coins out of these flips and maybe keep them in 2x2 or plastic sleeves instead? Anyone know whether these types of flips are OK to leave coins in long term?

Sally, it depends on the type of plastic the flips are made of. The ones that are soft and pliable have plasticizers that could affect your coins. The ones that are stiff but flexible should be ok. I wouldn't store coins in contact with printed cards, however. And it's probably a good idea to rinse the coins with acetone.

Thanks Hondo Boguss, I have taken all the coins out and given them a rinse in acetone. Good thing I did too. Some of the paper had stuck to the plastic and a few had to be destroyed to get the coins out. A couple of coins had ink on them too but that seems to have been removed with the acetone.

I liked the presentation so I might replace the uncirculated coins with high grade coins from circulation.

It makes me wonder whether storing coins from sets like "Bluey" or "Big Things" in the folders they were issued with is a good idea? The plastic retaining rings seem soft to me so maybe long term storage in those folders is not a good idea either?

I think I will stick to 2x2s or archive quality sleeves from now on just to be on the safe side.

This isn't RAM-official packaging; it's from Sherwood Numismatics (a now-defunct branch of the Downies empire), so it's basically a dealer's wrapper. Long-term storage was not high on their priority, so a Sherwood holder that actually worked for long term storage is a happy accident, not by design.By the looks of that coin in that flip, this is not an example of a happy accident.

RAM packaging these days is usually of higher quality and won't react with the coins directly as this Sherwood wrapper seems to have done, but some of their products offer little to no protection from the air (such as the privy-marked dollars in those little flip-cards). Basically, when considering long-term storage, if you can see the coin or parts of the coin directly exposed to the air, then consider either taking that coin out of that packaging and put it in a 2x2 or similar, or put the entire coin-inside-the-package inside some kind of airtight bag, box or container.

If you want to keep the Sherwood folder, I'd recommend taking it out of that flip and putting it in a brand new fliup that you know and trust will not do that to a coin.

Thanks for that info Sap. I think I will keep my favourite coins in 2 x 2s from now on. Some of those presentations were quite nice so it's a shame they aren't suitable for long term storage. In any case, I am focused on the coins and not the cardboard.

Yes,for long term storeage use stainless staples.

As an aside I purchased a bulk buy a few years back and many of the Coins were stored in saflips type of plastic holders, these had a tongue that tucked into the holder.
Where the tongue touched the coin there was a mark that had stained the silver coins.

Lesson learnt.
