My understanding is that the Superman gold coin will be released on September 25th. Will the mint charge based on the price of gold when we signaled our intent to make the purchase, or base it on the date the coin is actually shipped and our method of purchase is charged?

Price will be according to the pricing grid when it's released and adjusted each week

You're charged when the item ships, but you'll be charged the amount shown when you placed the order. You can't be expected to pay more than what was stated when you placed the order just because the metal value went up. (I'm sure someone will correct me if that's incorrect but it's the only thing that makes sense.)

That sums it up pretty well. I'm assuming ordered on drop day. They'll adjust the price each week, so if you order it the second week it's available, it could be more or less then the previous week.
I guess I didn't totally understand the comment
"when we signaled our intent to make the purchase".
Exactly how and when was an intent to purchase the coin made? They don't do subscriptions on precious metals for this reason, they can't tell you what it'll cost.
The price will be what the cost was when you ordered it. If they take 2 months to fulfill the order, and the price increases in that time, that's the Mints problem. I think that's why you don't see preorders on precious metals.
***I do want to add one thing here. What I had learned may not seem true to everyone. When I first got in to stacking and collecting, "precious metal", according to the US Mint, did NOT include silver. Precious metal to them was gold, platinum, and palladium. So when I say precious metal products are not available to subscribe to, that's what I mean, those 3 "super expensive" metals. Maybe some day they will decide to do the same with silver products (not allow silver products to be subscribed to). If this were to happen, I'd rather see subscriptions allowed, with some way to opt out a day or two before being billed (when the price is known).
I think they have enough margin built in to the price (in the premium over spot) to be ok with silver, maybe the price will be a couple bucks either way on the spot. Things are changing so much now that they do seem to delay releasing a price, even on silver products. But generally, you know what a normal proof ASE release is going to cost well in advance. With the more expensive, even a moderate change in percentage greatly affects the spot price, so they can't predict the price very well, so that price they adjust weekly, because they need to know that they aren't losing money on them. I think their premium is way too high as it is, bit can't blame them for making sure they aren't losing on them either.
(So much for adding one thing here)
