@earl, that is a good question. I'm seeing heavy mechanical wear, which has worn through the copper plating and removed some of the underlying zinc layer. None of that is a mint error though--just damage.

Yes, post-strike damage. Lateral abrasion most likely.

This looks like intentional damage, sanded down on obverse and reverse, and the rim was ground down to the devices at the edge.
