Hi Everyone,

I am a Canadian coin collector. I don't have many US coins but I came across this Mercury dime with a W mintmark and can't find much about the dime with this mintmark. Any idea of mintage? Is is as common as the other mintmark for this year? I know there were a ton of them made.

I am so sorry the photos are so bad

Thanks!

What you are seeing is the designer initials. The mint mark would be located on the reverse but since yours does not have one, it would be a Philadelphia mint.

Do not feel silly! It is a good question, especially when you are not from the US.

Also a fair question because certain newer coins are struck at West Point with a W mint mark.

Yep, it's the designer's initials. I can see how it can be confused with a W mint mark.

Adolph Weinman, in case you were wondering. He also designed the U. S. Walking Liberty half dollar.

Two of the most beautiful U. S. coins, in my book.
