Bad news. The ear lobe has taken a hit. The ear is a high point on the coin and is very exposed to being hit with another coin.

Yeah...darn. I have a confirmed 1997P 1DO-001, and the offset on the ear is different.

For comparison. Even on this doubled ear there appears to be a minor hit on the first earlobe.

I am not totally convinced that it is due to a hit on the ear lobe! The area appears to be an extra elongation to the ear lobe and may be a totally separate and new variety! See the edited and cropped pic I have provided and see if you agree! Frank

allright thanks for the new inspiration ill try and post a closer up picture, because I really want this one to be real, and huntsman got me motivated again!
I'm not discrediting anyone's theory but how can a coin hitting this make such a huge mark? and so smoothly incorporated into the design?

Besides appearing to be an extra extension to the Ear Lobe, it it were a hit, then it would not taper down and flow into the Beard details East of the Ear Lobe as it does!

Gentlemen, this is a normal ear. Note the V shaped indentation at the bottom right of the ear lobe. With a washable marker, draw a line from the bottom of the V to the edge of the ear and you will have exactly what Cole is showing on his coin. Not an expert, but this happens on a great many coins.

Let me chime in on this one. I have seen more then one of Cole317's 97's. If it's just a ding why do they all appear in the same location? I have not kept any thinking it was just damage but I will keep any that I find from now on and compare them to each other just in case it's a new discovery. John1

There is more envoled than the top of the ear. The doubling flows differently than the examples of Cole317's coin. There is doubling on the upper ear and on the lower NW of the lobe.

I tried for sooo long to take closer pictures but I can't. The more I look at it, it doesn't look like a doubled die, but I still don't get how a nick can look so much like a doubled ear. When I get my microscope i'll post better and closer pics of it. does anyone know of a good microscope I can use that will hook up to a Mac? thanks again for the help

Hi, Coles is not and Franks is nothing either. The ear looks like that on a great many cents of the 90s.
Thanks, Bill

Hi, just to address the microscope question. If you have a Harbor Freights in your area they have a Pocket Microscope that looks like a pen.. The thing is awesome.. I paid $8.00 and tax. They give great detail and a affordable price.. They have a website too.
