I ran across this strangely shaped D mint mark last night. Normally 1970-D nickel mint marks look fairly typical, although they do vary between the thin, flat spine D and the flared serif D. This mint marks just struck me as odd. The top left is super thick and pointy, and the bottom is super thin. I tried to imagine the engraver hammering the punch so crooked that the D was deformed like this, but is that even physically possible?

Coin is soaking in acetone, will have full coin pics posted in a bit.

Possibly it was hand punched at an angle with the
top being imbedded deeper than the bottom.

Just an angled mispunch. Maybe polishing to the southeast to accentuate even more?

I'm wondering if something (grease?) is in the bottom of the MM on the die and "clogging" the bottom serif and most of the bottom. That might keep metal from flowing into that part of the MM.
Words of encouragement are one of the major food groups.
We need to consume them regularly to thrive and grow.

Could be a reason for the lower area but would not explain the northwest point that is extremely thick.
