I like the detail of your example, but I'm not crazy about the surfaces, the color looks a little more pale than I'd like. The deep yellow-orange look of the AU-50 example looks more pleasing and original to my eyes.

That being said it's still an awesome coin, I see only trace amounts of wear on the high points and I think it easily makes AU-55.

Must be the worn die that made the 8's look different to me.

Thanks @IGE.

@Adam_E, will have to see what the coin looks like when it comes in. The color in photos depends to a large degree on the color of the light source.

I also did a side by side comparison with the subject coin in this thread at left and an MS62 example that is currently offered for sale for $142,500 on the right side. One thing I see is that the MS62 example at right is struck later when the dies were more worn down as the dentilation is significantly less sharp in the right side example. I think these dies were in a later state than even the earlier compared AU50 example. Seller says that the MS62 example is surpassed by just 2 MS63 examples at the top of the condition census.

One more comparison. The coin at left is the subject coin of this thread. The one at right was sold last summer. The two coins below were both graded by PCGS and received the exact same numerical grade, The coin on the right also has a CAC sticker. The coin on the right cost 40% more than what I paid for the coin on the left. Both coins seem to be struck at an early state of the die pair but note that almost all the stars in the coin on the left appear fully split while almost all the stars in the coin in the right look flat.

Normally I would have revealed the grade already but I expect to have this in hand today or tomorrow so I will reveal the grade then, alongside in hand photos of the coin.

This one came in. Looks great imho. Paid $24K for this one which I thought was a great price. The PCGS AU55 CAC example compared above sold in August 2024 for $33.6K and I think it was of inferior quality as the stars were flat for a coin struck in a similar die state. Welcome further thoughts. Thanks!

After seeing your in hand photos, I really surprised they didn't give this one an AU-58. Great coin!

Thanks psuman08. The Nittany Lions up against the #1 team in the country tomorrow. Do they have any shot? It would be a huge upset if they could pull it off.
