I was quite intrigued by this 1857 Flying Eagle cent. Is this unusual coloration considered toning or staining? Would the coloration push the coin down to AU, or is it a mint state coin?

Tough call. Could grade high AU or MS. I think the coin has toning.
Errers and Varietys.

I am in the AU group. If the coloration is toning, it might go MS. It is a great looking coin.

Looks like a toning issue to me. Would be helpful to have pics of both obverse and reverse with the color as close as you can get to what it looks like in hand. Also have you checked any of the clashed varieties of this date? Looks like some type of clash may be happening above the date.

I would avoid this coin at all costs. These photos look like Denver Coins/Canyon City Coins backgrounds and they crack out details coins from auctions and sell them raw on ebay. Not sure who this seller is, as I've never seen them before but you are better off avoiding this example.

We have talked about this seller before https://goccf.com/t/401362&Quote: Authenticity is guaranteed however coin Grading is subjective. Aside from authenticity, no condition suggestion or guarantee is offered in relation to how any specific coin will grade out with a third party appraiser. There is a "green spot" on the coin, I'm guessing that's environmental damage

Thanks for the help! As folks said on the 2021 thread, it's wonderful to have you guys around to enlighten us on these situations. The community knowledge at CCF is truly superb. As was also mentioned on the earlier threads, it was suspicious to me that a $1500-2000 coin wasn't already in a slab. I do see quite a number of Flying Eagle cents in AU and MS grade change hands on ebay, so I don't yet have a handle on how determined folks are about slabbing. The surface issues on this coin are a bummer. The physical structure of the coin is in good shape, and it clearly shows the rare mule clash down into CENT. I guess the images are documented for posterity. Maybe someone should update the discouraged sellers sticky post with this guy's new store name.
