I look at this coin and it seems legit to me and there are certain aspects of it that make me doubt. Not that I'm any good at identifying real clipped planchets. This coin will probably price out of the range I'm willing to spend anyway.

I don't think that it's a clip. It appears that there is a fine lip of raised metal along the clip - that edge should be smooth. Also, the rim at the clip does not look like other clipped planchet coins.
Inordinately fascinated by bits of metal with strange markings and figures

Not seeing any Blakesley Effect.

I don't really see a Blakesley Effect, although apparently sometimes when the clip gets big enough, it is absent. No visible Smith Effect on the corners. Most important to me, I don't see evidence of metal flow from adjacent devices into the void. Those letters should not be formed so crisply if the metal beneath them was squeezed sideways.
Could it be a real clip? Maybe. But without the classic identifiers, I couldn't call it a great example even if it were. I think there's a good chance it is not real.

So the consensus is someone cut part of the nickel off. Thank you all!! The sad part is this was offered by a coin shop that has been in business for many years.

I'll have to agree with the others above. But a edge shot might help to determine.

My opinion is that it is not a clip for a couple of reasons.

Quote: The sad part is this was offered by a coin shop that has been in business for many years. In all fairness, for a coin shop that has been operating many years, their picture quality is subpar for mint errors. Quote: So the consensus is someone cut part of the nickel off. I would frame it this way: as a buyer of a mint error coin, you have to assume it's a fake unless proven otherwise. Those pictures do not demonstrate the proper markers for a positive conclusion. Separating the two questions (authenticity vs. buy), I would say that those pictures are inconclusive on authenticity. If they were taken by a forum member, we would be asking for better images of specific areas mentioned above. As an online coin buyer, I think it's a pass. I wouldn't spend money on something I wasn't sure was authentic, unless there was huge upside potential or easy returns.

I would like to see an edge picture of the Clip. I'm thinking that it might be legitimate. Not all legitimate large Clips show the Blakesley Effect.
Errers and Varietys.

I personally believe that this coin is a legit mint error. Notably, I see a Blakesley Effect, most prominently right above the "E" of EPU.
Obviously I'd defer to the more experienced posters however, as the apparent metal finning over the outline of the "clip" is concerning.

I'll mail them and see if they will provide an edge on picture. This is the way they present all their coins - in a stand straight on of each side. They also provide a pic for both sides from about 30 degrees to the side which does helps at times in seeing details.
