Ancient-Greek-#2,-Real-Or-Not?
Ancient-Greek-#2,-Real-Or-Not?

This is the second of two that came into my LCS. Here are the facts (exactly the same as the first one):

12.3-12.4 grams, the weight of one type of stater. About 25 mm diameter. 99% + silver (tested). The photo is not that sharp, but there is very little wear and the design is quite sharp, almost too good. The edges have no seam, but do seem to be a bit tooled and unexpectedly regular. The surface has small pits and seems a bit smoothed in spots.

I cannot yet find the coin this is supposed to be.

I agree Stater-sized. It looks to be a close, but not exact, match to the Staters issued by Olympia for the 107th Olympiad:

Numista has a whole bunch of these from various Olympiads and my guess is that your specific example isn't listed. I'll dig around to see if I can find a closer match, but hopefully one of our Greek experts will weigh in as well.

Added: I'm seeing more than 60 examples of this general type listed on acsearch using the keywords STATER OLYMPIAD IONIC and there is not a single one with the eagle's body facing right but the head turned back to the left.

Thanks. This narrows is down quite a bit. At any rate neither this nor my other are likely to be fantasies.

Honestly, I am not very confident that this coin could be genuine. First of all, this types are extremely expensive, and so very tempting to replicate. There are many fakes all around. Second, the style seems to me wrong. There is no consistent wear and the condition of the metal seems too clean and perfect for such an old coin. Even the lettering seems weird.

So, I would say 95% probabilities it is fake. If you are in the remaining 5%, you are a rich man!

@ancient67, thanks.

I have considerable doubts too.
