Hey guys, In a batch of wheat cents I purchased at a a local estate auction last week I found this coin. Heavy deposits on both sides. Could not read the date at all so I ran it thru an acetone bath for 18 hours and a few larger chunks of the buildup came off but not where date is located. But in hand the date is a little more readable now. Looks like it could be a 1914D! The areas where the chucks came off reveal a fairly nice brown surface underneath. What is the best way to conserve this coin and get the deposits without causing damage? Any advice is appreciated.

I believe that sodium sesquicarbonate is available at big box stores in the paint section.

That piece has been around the corner a few times...perhaps spent quite a while buried.

Thanks everyone!

Hondo Boguss I will check and see if they carry it in stock. Do you know if this comes as a powder you mix or a liquid or both? and which would be better for what I am doing? Thanks

Update...after a full round of conservation per the information jbuck provided the coin did not respond much. However, the date did become clear enough to see that it was a 1944D cent. I guess I should not be surprised as that is about 99.999% more likely than a 1914D. Just wanted to say thanks to jbuck for the info he provided. Gave me some valuable experience in conserving coins! Thanks to all who commented.

My pleasure!

I wish it would have been a better discovery, but you gained experience that may prove to be more valuable in the future.
