1983P Lincoln Cent from OBW- Weak Strike (2.46g)
https://www.error-ref.com/weak_stri...rampressure/

I got myself another batch of 1983P OBW rolls and this little beauty was in it. Its weight is relatively normal at 2.46g.
My apologies in advance for the less-than-optimal images. (This new phone ...)

There is weakness towards the outer third of the coin on both faces. (I believe this is because the convex nature of the die faces, which causes the central portion of the die to contact the planchet first.) The weak strike has allowed multiple areas of the design and field to show "flatness" and the original striations from the planchets surface. (Many peripheral letters show the flatness also, but this new phone is not cooperating.)

The weakest area of the design seems to be Lincoln's head.

Let me know your thoughts.

Cool find! I'm not sure if from a weak strike or grease. The other strong devices in similar areas make me lean towards grease in various areas.

Very nice find! I'm thinking it's a Weak Strike issue. I could be wrong though.

A agree this a Struck Through Grease issue. Specifically a "greasy ghost" or on its way to be one. The large weak spots on reverse match the head and jacket area on obverse. The rims also appear to be well struck which isn't seen on low pressure strikes.

Thanks for taking a look guys and adding your insights.

The rims did give me pause, but the fact that the striations were in every area of weakness and were still visible led me to believe no grease was involved (since grease would eliminate the striations).
The obverse rim is weakly defined. The reverse rim seems to be a little stronger.

One thing I wasn't able to capture with my current, inconsistent phone was the weakness and striations also showing up on the top of the peripheral mottos and letters.

I'll see if I can get some better images of the striations.

Very interesting. I'm thinking a grease issue at the moment. Would be fun to examine this one in-hand.

Does anyone thinking this is Struck Through Grease (or anyone else) have any thoughts on why the grease wouldn't have eliminated the light striations in the field, devices, and designs?

(My apologies, but my current imaging setups aren't producing decent images of the striations.)

ps. I'd be happy to send this to someone interested in looking at it in hand. Just PM me.

I was reading through the different types of Grease Filled Dies on Error-Ref again and the example for "Grease-Mold doubling" still has the striations showing too, very similar to yours. It's also my understanding that the grease becomes extremely hot during the strike, I could see this not only not flattening the striations but possibly raising them even more, exacerbating an already poorly plated coin.

Check out this example. https://www.error-ref.com/grease-mold-doubling/

The striations are probably more visible because of the grease and are present on the non grease area well. I agree with Jon, that it's more of a plating issue.

Here's my greasy ghost example posted a while back. Striations present throughout the coin.
