I have two coins I need an opinion on the first is a 1974 Roosevelt dime.

I have seen other dimes missing the nickel clad but this one looks like a rusted steel no sign of copper anywhere. It also looks to have been never in circulation. The town I got this box of pennies from is known for it's cottages and American visitors so I assume it went from someone's pocket and into a jar when it was discovered not to be a Canadian coin.

I found this up here in Canada in a box of pennies purchased many years ago at the bank back when they the penny out of circulation.

The other coin a Jefferson nickel, it will be posted when I get some good images.

What does it weigh?

Good question about the weight. The coin is in a cardboard holder and I have never taken it out to get it weighed but I see now I am going to have to do that. I also did some research on the alloy nickel itself and it does not rust. It does however corrode but it's ability to resist corroding is higher than any other metal. I see no sign of this dime being associated with nickel or copper.

to CCF.

Yes, an accurate weight is VERY important in determining if your coin is missing the cladding.

When you get ready to post your nickel - please start a new topic for it. Leave this one solely for the dime.

To CCF! I'll wait for the weight to be posted. I'm thinking environmental damage/toning, since I can see the normal color on the rim, on the obverse.

The cladding of US CuNi coins is an alloy of 75% copper and 25% nickel. They are susceptible to chemicals in the environment.

Weight will tell for sure, but that is exactly what metal detected clad coins look like, I've found thousands of them.

Looks like environmental toning after being buried in the ground. An accurate weight will confirm.
