Was out hitting the local banks today searching for half dollar rolls (silver!) when I went into one bank. I had called them ahead of time to see if they had any halves, which I always do. The woman on the phone said they could just about put a roll together with what all the tellers had in their coin trays, so I made the trip.
When I got there and told them what I wanted, the one teller that I went to started going around to all of the others to gather up the coins. Well "Dave" wasn't at his station, so the teller waiting on me said she would just take his one half and pay him for it when he got back from lunch out back. She picked up the coin, and when I saw it I immediately knew it wasn't a half! She said, "this is too big to be a half dollar" and I said, trying to choose my words carefully, "I think it is one of those older dollar coins". Unfortunately, "Dave" chose just then to come out of the back room, and he saw my teller about to hand me the coin. "No, I am keeping that!" he practically yelled. Oh well! But he did show it to me. It was a 1926-S
Peace dollar. He said that a local merchant had received it and three other silver dollars for payment recently, and had deposited them. He had given the other three to three other tellers, and he said he liked this one the best because of the word PEACE on the back. He said "the other three were older and had a different woman's head on them". Oh, missed opportunities!
