I was examining a collection of Lincoln Memorial pennies and found a 1998 penny that seems to have a double obverse. The doubling is noticeable in the word "LIBERTY" and the date. What are your thoughts?
That would be from Die Deterioration. The metal flows towards the rim during striking and the metal flow wears out the sharpness of the incuse designs on the rim side of the letters and numbers.
Thank you, Marv. I appreciate your quick response and the helpful information. What was mainly confusing me was the last digit of 1998. It didn't appear to be an outflow; rather, it looked like a secondary digit, with the loops inside the primary digit. Thanks again.
