It has the look of a coin that has been dipped in acid.
Inordinately fascinated by bits of metal with strange markings and figures

I was thinking that also but why does Lincoln look so good? Maybe Lincoln is acid proof.

The surfaces are definitely not natural. Acid perhaps as HondoB suggests.

Acid damage is my first thought. Regardless how, it is PMD.

I agree with the acid damage assessment. PMD.

if it is acid damage, then the cent should weigh in lighter than normal - do you have an accurate weight of it?

Acid etched, a damaged cent. Look at the rims, they are the first to go when etched. Keep as a novelty but there is no premium for it.

Even soda will do that eventually in a car cup holder.

Exposure to a rather corrosive agent.

Weight 3.09 grams. I thought of acid use also but why does Lincoln look ok? He still has his hair. Is Lincoln acid proof? How did he escape? I thought that was odd.

if it was dipped in vertically where only the rims entered the acid would prevent the center of the coin from much damage.

Weight loss is one of the diagnostic criteria for acid exposure damage, so with a normal weight I suspect high heat applied by blow torch.
The discoloration in the center seems to suggest this as well.

I just noticed something. The D mint mark looks a little sideways to me anyway. Could anyone comment on this? I had to blow it up to see it. I have bought a special coin camera but I am still trying to get it working. It needs a TF card to make it work. It came here with out it.
