Hello, need your help here.. I am considering to buy one of the three 1948 Canad Silver dollars. they are expensive... , like anywhere from 1400 Dollars and up to No limit in MS67.. However, I suspect, for my own reasons, call it a built in Coin DEW-line, (It raises questions every time I am about to make a larger purchase), that the coin in question might be a fake. I have taken scans of two authentic coins and put them up together with the coin in question for you to see. Which one is the fake, OR are they all authentic? Expert help is greatly appreciated.. thank you. ok, here is the rest.... any comments? Edited by hhbkiddo 06/14/2009 5:34 pm

The "4" in 1948 catches my eye on coin "C". Interestingly, there are minor differences between all three coins, meaning there may be quite a few small varieties for the 1948 dollar if two of the coins are legit.

I say B is very suspect. The 8 seems very broad in nature..and how many pristine 1948's are there really left out there. This coin is just too perfect for me.Then again, look how far the last A in Canada is from the denticles in C coin then the rest. I cant see much on the obverse side when I enlarge it. A friggin google ad gets in the way.

"A" stood out for me ... little inconsistancies, but nothing I honestly would have caught myself had I been considering such a purchase ... then, since the pics are off ebay

Now, here is another, just to see your opinions of it. one of these 3 1948 is a fake! guaranteed! which one is it, and WHY? would YOU have recognized it as a fake if ONLY the actual picture of ONE coin would be up? and HOW many of you were aware of this type of fake?..? and , HOW many of you would havd bid on it on ebay? I have a few more HHB anyone wanting better pix, just contact me. Will be happy to show all the pix I have of forged 1945-1948 Dollars... here is the rest of the dirty secrets...

One more thing, I will mark the two sets I have posted, in the next day or two and post the marked coins . It will then become very clear that most likely every one of you would have purchased each one of these 1948 dollars individually without blinking an eye. However, not knowing you had just purchased a fake... with at least two of them. I did and learned my lesson! hence my caution with every 1945-1948 I come across. HOWEVER, if nobody is interested ... it will be ok with me..I will not do it then. HHB

Good work HHB. Apparently after only about three years in the hobby you know more about counterfeits than some folks who have been collectors for over 40+ years. And these are the kind of counterfeits to worry about. The 4 in coin A is clearly off (as well as the rest of the date) - so I would consider it a counterfeit. With coin B, the 4 appears to be a bit off (but a higher resolution of the date would help confirm this). However, the positioning of the legend relative to the portrait is noticably off what would be considered the proper alignment for the coin. So coin B is a counterfeit. Only coin C appears normal. If both PCGS and ICCS certified coin B, then this is not good. But note that there are counterfeit holders out there - both PCGS and ICCS. Perhaps a valid coin was certified and then the counterfeit coin was put into a counterfeit holder using the original certification numbers. Scary. These are the kind of counterfiets to be on the watch for that I mentioned in another thread on counterfeiting. These coins ARE NOT being sold as marginal quality "replica" or "copy" coins, but are being sold and bought as the real thing. Again, good work!!

"C" on the first set, "1" on the second set. Unless two date varieties exist for 1948, the straight-sided four gives coin C away.
On the second set, the differences are finer - font/letter strike, denticle size and spacing, facial detail...they all point me to #1.
I look forward to the answer and would not be one bit surprised to be totally wrong.

This ones much tougher. I agree...#2 is a fake. On another note, I wouldnt dream of buying an important key date coin like this without it being certified.

Coin B from the first set, and coin #1 from the second set. The nose looks different, and check out the smaller loop in the ear.
