*** Moved by Staff to a more appropriate forum. ***1942/1 P Mercury dimeI just picked this dime up at our local show about three hours ago. I thought I would share and give everybody a chance to guess the grade. I'm not really a dime guy, but I love varieties. I'll share the grade on Sunday night. Nice pickup! I'll say VF. I looked at a grading chart.

The photos may be playing tricks with my eyes, but the photos make it look like this one may have been cleaned. You have it in hand and can answer that better that I can with the pictures. It looks on the VF-35/EF-40 bubble, and based on the photos, I'm leaning toward EF-40, and possibly details (cleaned).
It's been a challenge to find decent looking higher grade examples of this variety on the market for the last few years. This looks like a nice one, and I wouldn't shy away from an older cleaning details example.

I'll say the obverse holds it to an XF40.

This one was a little tough, but everyone came in pretty close. It straight graded at VF 35 by ANACS. I think you guys were right about the potential for this getting a details grade because it does seem to show evidence of a lite cleaning with the darkness showing up around the devices. I didn't see the potential cleaning when deciding to buy it because I was impressed by how clear the overdate is. It's not a late die state hiding any part of the two dates. Originally, I thought the grade was a little low, but now I think the grader did the original submitter a favor by giving it a net grade of VF35, that took the cleaning into account. In my mind, it's better to have a lower straight grade than a higher "details" grade. Thanks for taking a peek and sharing your thoughts. (I'll be sharing this one with JBuck for an episode of "Guess the Price" so I'm not going to share the cost yet. I hope I remember to come back after "Guess the Price", in case anyone is curious.)

please try and wait 48hrs prior to revealing.
one of my favorite error coins. I'm more partial to this one rather than the D version. bought mine about 30 years ago. VF20 for $120.
i do agree the coin looks like the original has been removed. lighting and glare can always alter the appearance. based on the slab photos if there was a cleaning, it was light enough to pass muster.
yours appears to be VF35 might be a tad short of 40 looking at the reverse. nice addition

For years and years and years, I have said that three new grading steps are needed. The most needed new step is EF-48. The other two are VF-38 and F-18.
Your coin is an absolute poster coin for a VF-38 grade.

Thanks for your insight FortCollins.
If they gave the "plus"(+) designation for coins in less than MS grade, this one would probably be a prime candidate.

I can see your point but its difficult enough to narrow down circulated grades than to add 3 points to a grade. maybe get rid of the * or +
